Job Description
A qualified Code Machine Operator has knowledge of the code machine line and accessory equipment, is capable of setting up and operating code machines to apply ink stripe/band marking and/or print legends to insulated wire and cables. The operator understands and performs all tasks in conformance with technical instruction sheets, posted general instructions, verbal instructions, and completes required documentation. The operator is expected to monitor for and detect faulty machine operation, defective materials and/or process problems and communicate to supervisor.
Essential Duties:
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the code line equipment including control panel, payoff, takeup/traversing system, contact printer, footage counter, spark tester, spiral striping head, wire print washing unit and drying ovens.
  • Prior to setup check traveler cards, MITs and wire/cable to verify they are correct (follow quality inspection checklist).
  • Set ovens to proper temperature settings, select proper ink/color/paint for job (from MIT), select proper wipers/pads, set up printer (ink jet/wheel) to print required legend, sequential footage, or other identifying data as required.
  • Mount payoff reels, thread wire/cable through painter, footage counter, spark tester, printer, drying ovens or other equipment as specified and attach to takeup reel.
  • Attend to machine during operation to assure legibility of print and/or ink stripe/band, proper location on wire/cable, that ink is evenly applied and according to specifications. Monitor levels and viscosity of ink in the pots.
  • Wash wire/cable as required. Detect and repair defects as authorized and able.
  • Perform code line tasks in conformance with manufacturing instruction sheets (MIT), the safety work practice summary and process set up sheets. Complete workcenter documentation, length sheets, traveler reel tags, traceability sheets/tags and labor reporting sheets.
