Introduction to the job

Patent counsel will be responsible for working in close partnership with business units, engineers, cross functional teams and other peers to provide a wide range of patent law functions within ASML. The successful candidate will be part of ASML's international intellectual property team helping to protect company innovations and mitigate IP risk. This position will be based in Wilton, CT and will report to the local senior patent counsel.The Wilton IP team is part of ASML's international IP team and provides IP services to scientists, engineers and management involved with the Company's products covering extreme UV (EUV) and deep UV (DUV) systems.

Role and responsibilities

* Actively develop and manage a global patent portfolio.
* Conduct inventor interviews and present disclosures at invention review meetings.
* Manage outside counsels to properly draft and prosecute high quality patent applications, draft petitions, appeals, and/or other exceptional or non-routine papers as necessary to gain allowance/issuance.
* Interact with and provide guidance to outside counsels consistent with ASML objectives and operating guidelines.
* Evaluate patent and other IP positioning of third parties to provide risk assessment, freedom-to-operate analysis, product clearance, and mitigation strategies.
* Evaluate third party patent infringement claims against ASML.
* Interact and work regularly with key stakeholders in engineering and business organizations to acquire a deep knowledge of current and future ASML products and business goals, and develop and align ASML patent portfolio with those business goals.
* Provide guidance and counsel to business teams on a range of intellectual property matters as requested or deemed appropriate.
* Conduct periodic training to ASML employees on IP matters.
* Some travel, both domestic and international will be required.

Experience with physics, optics, mechatronics, and/or semiconductor processing technology strongly preferred.
* Patent preparation, drafting and prosecution experience is required, experience with or knowledge of patent practice in non-US jurisdictions is a plus.
* Experience in the rendering of patentability, non-infringement opinions, and general risk analysis is required.
* Experience with interacting, developing and discussing strategy with engineers and senior management.
* Experience in managing outside counsels.

Education and experience

* Bachelor's Degree in the engineering or physical sciences disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, systems and controls science, physics, materials, optics or related field.
* 5+ years of relevant patent and engineering experience, including patent preparation and prosecution, freedom to operate, and portfolio management.
* Preferred to be licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state or the District of Columbia.

* Licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
* Juris Doctorate (J.D.) preferred, from an accredited law school with excellent academic performance.

* Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, at least one IP database, and on-line research tools.

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Excellent judgment and critical thinking skills to understand how assigned responsibilities advance ASML's business objectives and able to provide practical and actionable solutions and advice.
* Excellent client service ethics and skills, with an advanced understanding of client relationship-building.
* Ability to translate and statistically analyze data, and effectively report problems through written and/or graphic formats.
* Strong competency with the tools, systems, and procedures required to accomplish the job.

Other information

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. * 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
