Job Description

The Manager, DX & GQC Lab Services will oversee the daily operations and personnel of a high-volume diagnostic and genetic testing laboratory to preserve the health and genetic integrity of JAX mouse production and research colonies. The ideal incumbent must have demonstrated leadership abilities dedicated to ensuring quality data is produced in a timely and accurate manner, as well as fostering teamwork and promoting staff development. Position oversees both Bar Harbor and Jax West facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of staff including the assignment of duties, completion of performance appraisals, preparation of annual budgets, and administrative oversight of the Sample Tracker & TGS/GQC databases.
  • Preparation of Health Reports and associated summaries, genetic testing profiles, and routine health and genetic monitoring schedules.
  • Coordination, receipt, extraction and high-throughput processing of mouse tissue samples for the genetic monitoring of mouse Production and Repository colonies. Oversight of the analysis, documentation, interpretation, and reporting of genetic monitoring results.
  • Assist personnel with routine monitoring laboratory procedures (necropsy, microbiology, parasitology, serology, or GQC) when short-staffed or there is a high volume of work.
  • Notification of senior manager biosecurity/Chief of Diagnostic Services of test results suggestive of an infectious disease outbreak. Also responsible for notification of JMS & Repository management in the event of a genetic contamination in the mouse colonies.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related discipline is preferred, or a Master's degree with 3-5 years experience directly managing staff in a high-throughput diagnostic or genetic testing laboratory will be considered
  • Must possess a strong working knowledge of microbiology and/or molecular biology, as well as a demonstrated understanding of mammalian genetics.
  • Must possess strong analytical, organizational, and execution skills, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Exceptional written and interpersonal communications skills are essential
  • Proficiency in manipulating data and very comfortable with computer applications
  • Familiarity with JAX strains is an asset
  • Must be available for On-call duty
  • Possessing a background in diagnostics is highly desirable
