What is a Support Specialist?

    • Working one-on-one with participants at job sites
  • Has the following traits: cheerful, helpful, patient, kind, easygoing, energetic, trustworthy, polite, creative, honest, punctual.

What Qualifications Do I Need?

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, AS/AA or higher preferred
  • 6 months employment in a position that demonstrates person accountability and decision making (nonpaid family caregivers or related personal experience can be substituted)
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to communicate effectively (read, write and speak in English) with people served and team members
  • Ability to work in a variety of locations, performing different jobs based upon the needs of the people served
  • Desire to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities

Core Responsibilities Include:

  • Orientation and Individual Service Planning - Assist in the implementation and completion of orientation plans for individuals entering, transferring to, or re-entering agency services. Collaborate with the team to develop Individual Service Plans (ISPs) and establish goals and objectives.
  • Assessments and Performance Evaluation - Administer tools such as observations, vocational and skill assessments, and interest inventories to evaluate performance. Implement vocational plans and accurately document progress and areas of concern. Implement behavioral support plans and track progress. Provide information for progress summaries and reports to maintain comprehensive case records.
  • Activities and Engagement - Plan and provide interesting and challenging activities aligned with individuals' plans during downtime and free time. Ensure the safety and well-being of individuals during activities. Offer crisis intervention and guidance using approved psychological and physical management techniques when necessary.
  • Supervision and Support - Monitor individuals served during work and free time, providing guidance, direction, and intervention as needed. Understand and maintain the required level of supervision in accordance with the individual service plan and/or as instructed by a supervisor. Attend to personal care issues of individuals when required.
  • Safety and Transportation - Report all incidents and accidents to supervisors and rehabilitation counselors promptly and accurately. Address site safety concerns by removing or reporting hazards. Safely transport individuals to and from assigned activities, ensuring proper passenger security. Adhere to program-specific procedures for vehicle maintenance and care.
