SSNX Propulsion Plant Electrical Systems Engineering

The next generation fast attack submarine (SSNX) engineering team is in need of Propulsion Plant Electrical Systems Engineers. The SSNX Power Distribution Group has openings for highly motivated engineers to support the development of a new electric plant design for the next class of submarines. The group is in the process of developing a new cost-effective, power dense, electric plant architecture that utilizes the latest developments in solid state power electronics for power conversion, system protection and coordination. The immediate focus is the evaluation of different propulsion systems and a recommendation to Naval Reactors (NR) in 2023 identifying the best propulsion plant (electric drive, hybrid drive, or mechanical drive) based on cost, size, and technical superiority.

Responsibilities include electric plant component evaluations such as a state-of-the-art protection system and power conversion equipment to be incorporated into the distribution system. Other responsibilities include development of medium voltage/medium frequency distribution system to support new electric drive concepts. Development of the new architecture will include tasks such as performing modeling and analysis (fault, power systems, stability, protection, etc.) of both systems and components, developing documents such as functional requirements, interface and component specifications, electric plant architecture recommendations, and vendor workscopes.
