Your Job

Fibertek leads the industry in the development of space-based laser systems and seeks to expand our team of world-recognized space laser experts with the addition of an experienced or emerging space laser leader. In this dynamic position, you will work collaboratively with mission partners to define requirements, evaluate technology trades, establish maturation plans, and oversee the engineering and delivery of first-of-kind laser systems for space-based sensing.

You will have diverse responsibilities throughout laser system development that include:
  • Technical discussions with customers to discuss requirements, technical priorities and trades
  • Design and analysis of system concepts that respond to customer needs
  • Leadership of engineering teams in maturation of concepts to high-fidelity designs
  • Prototyping of new system design concepts and experimental demonstration of performance
  • Oversight of design implementation including final system testing and performance verification
  • Authorship of winning technical proposals

  • Technical leader on some of Fibertek’s most important strategic programs
  • Broad range of laser technologies and maturity, from early laboratory demonstrations to full fledge space missions
  • Pushing the state-of-art of space based lidar sensing technologies for earth science, planetary exploration, astro-physic, and national defense missions
  • Recognition through engagement with Government working groups, presentation at conferences and publication in peer-reviewed journals

Fibertek is a small business with a long history of leadership in delivering advanced laser-based systems and technologies to the defense and civil space communities with an emphasis on first-of-kind systems developed for the most challenging environments. We are leaders in delivering lasers for space-based earth-sensing LIDAR for NASA (e.g., CALIPSO and ICESat-2 laser systems) and in developing advanced laser and sensor systems for LIDAR and other applications in the defense community.
Fibertek has a deep portfolio of solid-state and fiber-based laser systems; has delivered multiple lidar sensors for 3D imaging, tracking and navigation; and has a rapidly growing product line in space-based laser communications across multiple mission scenarios from low-earth orbit to deep space.


Required Skills and Experience

  • Doctorate or Masters degree in Optics, Engineering, Physics, or other related field
  • >10 years professional experience
  • US Citizen and eligibility to obtain a US Security Clearance
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Expertise in one or more of the following skill areas: laser physics, optical systems engineering, space-based optical systems, non-linear optics, optical component qualification for aerospace and defense
  • Demonstrated experience in design, development, and engineering of laser-based optical systems (examples include lidar sensors, lasers, and/or laser communication systems)

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Specific expertise in diode-pumped zigzag slab solid-state lasers with pulse energy >100 mJ and/or space qualification of laser systems
  • Expertise in related disciplines, such as: engineering of space and airborne systems, modeling and analysis of laser and/or optical systems, directed energy, spectroscopy or others • Established relationships in organizations developing space-flight missions and systems, including NASA, US Government defense organizations, and/or aerospace Prime Contractor mission partners
  • Authorship of technical proposals
